Travel ten stories below the deep blue seas of Cozumel aboard the Atlantis Submarine on this exciting Carnival cruise shore excursion. Begin the adventure in a covered 96-passenger boat on a short, leisurely ride to rendezvous with the Atlantis XII Submarine. As the boat hugs the Cozumel coastline, gaze out over the pristine waters, smell the ocean breezes, and look for flying fish.
Your boat suddenly stops on the open sea. Before you, rising dramatically out of the depths of the Caribbean, is the Atlantis XII, ready to receive passengers! Watch as boat and sub maneuver to hook up; soon it's your turn to disembark the boat and descend a 9-step ladder deep into the submarine.
Once aboard the 48-passenger, 80-ton submarine, you'll grab a seat next to a porthole and listen to the sounds of the air ballast adjustments and pilot-crew communications as the submarine prepares to dive below the surface of Cozumel's deep blue waters.
The submarine dives. You're now below the depths of the Caribbean, staring out a porthole onto the world beneath the sea. The sub passes by a huge coral head teeming with juvenile fish. Look for blue and white striped grunts, queen and French angelfish, dog snappers, and blue chromis.
Your pilot requests authorization to dive even deeper; your eyes are fixed on the depth gauges. When you reach 100 feet below the surface of the sea, Cozumel's blue-black abyss appears in your porthole. Circling sharks may appear at this point, hungry for food. Have your camera ready in case a shark decides to stay for a while.
The submarine continues on to Cozumel's protected Chankanaab Reef, where you can wave to scuba divers as you watch for stingrays, moray eels, hawksbill turtles, and Cozumel's unique Splendid Toadfish.
After exploring this world-famous reef teeming with marine life, the submarine heads back up to the surface. Your 40-minute dive to the ocean depths is topped off with complimentary rum or fruit punch. Chat with the submarine crew and share your impressions of the dive with fellow passengers.
