They were later used by the Maya to elude capture by the conquering Spanish and sometime later, pirates hid in them to ambush cargo ships and Spanish galleons as they made off with treasure taken form the Maya.
After centuries of isolation the channels have become a perfect sanctuary for fish and birds of all species. These days these channels and flats boast Tarpon, Bonefish, Permit, Snapper, and Snook to name a few and are ranked by many anglers as one of the most privileged fishing areas in the world.
