See The Mayan Ruins at Tulum

Tulum was one of the last cities built by the Maya and was an important trading hub, generating enormous wealth exporting jade, turquoise and obsidian during the Mayan post-classic period (1200 AD).  The Castillo, or castle, is perched on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean coast.  Just north of the Castillo is a pathway that leads down to a sandy beach and the multi-hued Caribbean. The Tulum archaeological site is relatively compact compared with many other coastal Maya sites, and is one of the best-preserved. The Tulum ruins are the third most-visited archeological site in Mexico.

Casa Cenote Tulum Mexico

Explore Casa Cenote

Casa Cenote (also known as Cenote Manati) is a unique swimming, paddling and snorkeling destination near Tulum.  This is an open cenote resembling a lake or river, rather than a cenote you climb, jump or diver down in to.  As it connects to the ocean, there is a mix of fresh and salt water.  This is a bit off the beaten path, so it should be booked as a shore excursion.

Coba Ruins in Mexico

Coba Ruins on a Royal Caribbean Cruise shore excursion.

Climb The Coba Pyramid

The Mayan Ruins of Coba is a popular shore excursion, accessible by a ferry ride to Playa del Maren followed by a bus trip to the ruins. Explore the site by walking or riding a rented bike through the tree-lined paths that connect areas of the site to the main pyramid. You can also climb to the top of the 138-foot-tall Ixmoja Pyramid, part of the Nohoch Mul group of buildings, and enjoy the jungle views.  The ancient city of Coba offers a glimpse of the Maya civilization through many intricate engravings.

Jeep Tour in Cozumel on a MSC Cruise

Jeep Tour in Cozumel on a MSC Cruise shore excursion.

Rent a Jeep

You can go on a Jeep Tour shore excursion or you can just rent a jeep when you get off the ship in Cozumel.  You will see several rental companies if you just look around.  Your first stop should be the gas station, as they are often rented close to empty.  On most cruise itineraries, you have time to head to the east side of the island where you will find food, drinks and hammocks at Mexcalito’s Last Frontier (see below).  After that, you can make the loop around the island or head back to the town of San Miguel and do some shopping, drinking or eating.  Pay attention to “no parking” signs.  If you rent a jeep on your own, keep an eye on the time because the ship will leave you if you are late.

Journey to San Gervasio

Tucked away in an iguana-filled wildlife refuge, the San Gervasio archaeological zone was once a sacred pilgrimage site dedicated to Ixchel, the goddess of fertility.  Although not as massive and well known as other ruins on the mainland, these are on Cozumel so the site is much easier to get to.  If you rent a jeep or have a driver, this would be a perfect adventure.  You can also book shore excursions that include the site.  The turn to get to the site is about half way to Mezcallitos (see below).

Do Nothing at Mezcalito’s

Mezcalito’s Last Frontier is where you should go if you rent a jeep.  You can also get a cab to drop you off but getting back to the ship would be questionable.  The pic above pretty much sums it up.  In addition to cerveza and tequila, they have a small food menu.  There’s shopping near by.
