Controlling Waste (And Waistline)

Have you noticed that more and more cruise lines have done away with trays in the casual dining buffets?

Well – truth be known – recent studies have shown that not providing trays actually decreases “food waste” (that’s the stuff you pile onto your plate that you don’t eat) by some 35 percent. “Stuff” the ship has to discard after you mound you plate(s) and quit.

Cruise ships provide a plethora of food 24-7 – but do you really need to try to eat it all at once? When did “I think – therefore I am” become “It’s there – therefore I must load it on my plate?”

Lorraine has attended buffets on land and on sea where diners behave as if there’s no tomorrow.

How about finishing one plate and coming back for more if you’re still hungry? What a totally civilized idea. Not only would you be helping to control waste – but your waistline as well!

There is enough food discarded on a single seven-day cruise to feed the population of a small country. Where does it wind-up?

Well, the best answer Lorraine can find is that it becomes “fish food.” Yep! It’s mixed with water, ground-up, and discharged into the ocean – those fishies eat really good - (especially on “formal nights) – LOL!
